Frequently Asked Questions

What is BoTox?

BoTox is a licensed brand of Botulinum toxin, a natural occurring protein produced by the
bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The toxin blocks the signal of chemical messages set from the
nerve to cause the muscle to contract. Without these messages, the muscle stays in a resting
state until the signals recover, which takes 8 to 12 weeks on average.

What areas can be treated?

Cosmetic BoTox can be used in a number of areas with the aim of reducing movement of the
muscles which cause expression lines (dynamic lines) or symptoms. For best results, skin
should be in a good condition and the target lines not too furrowed. Further information is

Do BoTox injections hurt?

Treatment is generally not described as painful. A very fine needle is used and most people
tolerate the injections well with no anaesthetic. Please request an anaesthetic cream if you are
nervous about needles.

How long do the results of BoTox injections last?

Results tend to last 3-4 months. Movement will begin to recover from 8 weeks. Treatment at intervals of less than 3 months is not recommended and may lead to resistance. Should you choose not to maintain the results and receive no further treatment, your skin and muscles will return to their pre-treatment state.

Are BoTox injections safe?

All treatments carry a degree of risk. Risks and possible complications will be discussed at your
consultation prior to any decision to proceed with treatment.

Possible side effects include:

  • Bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site
  • Headaches, flu-like symptoms, or a sensation of heaviness
  • Asymmetry of expression
  • Temporary drooping of the brow or eyelid (ptosis)
  • Dry mouth or blurred vision (rare)
  • Allergic reaction (very rare)

Adverse events are uncommon and usually occur within a few days of treatment. They are
temporary and usually resolve within weeks. We will provide aftercare advice designed to
minimise risk and achieve the best possible outcome.

Am I suitable for Botox injections?

The use of Botox is not recommended for:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • People with neuromuscular disorders, such as myasthenia gravis
  • People taking certain medications, such as aminoglycoside or tetracycline antibiotics
  • Those with infection or inflammation at the injection site
  • People who are allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients in Botox, including human albumin
